Employees of OJSC Irkutskenergo participate in landscaping a parkway along the Lower Embankment in Irkutsk

On May 17, 2014, employees of OJSC Irkutskenergo patricipated in landscaping a parkway along the Lower Embankment in Irkutsk as part of the “Gift of Life for the Planet” project, which involved planting trees and shrubs and arranging flower beds. A few years ago, following the renovation of the embankment, dozens of trees were planted there, but this year some of them had to be replaced with new saplings of lime trees, ash trees, rowan trees, blue and white spruce and shrubs (Japanese roses and Amur maples).

The administration of Irkutsk offered assistance in restoring the plantings. Coordinators of the “Gift of Life for the Planet” project suggested reintroducing the long-forgotten practice of patronage with regard to the future parkways. The suggestion was taken up by five organizations, including OJSC Irkutskenergo and OJSC Irkutskenergosbyt. In the future, the power companies intend to engage experienced dendrologists and horticulturalists to cultivate the plants along the “60th anniversary of Irkutskenergo” parkway, and to organize regular voluntary clean-ups in which the companies’ employees will participate.

Oleg Prichko, CEO of OJSC Irkutskenergo: “We had no doubt that the green campaign would receive support. This is our city; this is where we live; this is where the company’s employees, their children and grandchildren live and work. The Lower Embankment is a popular recreation area that the citizens of Irkutsk like a lot. That is why we were happy to take a part of the parkway under our patronage.”
